Taking a brief

I’ll ask you questions about the project so I can understand your needs and how best to meet them. Here are examples of the questions I ask.

About the content

What do you want the content to achieve?

Is there a problem you need it to solve?

How do you want people to feel when they read it?

What do you want them to do after reading it?

About the audience

Who is your target audience? How old are they? What do they do? Income? Education level?

How do your audience like what they read to sound? In other words, what tone of voice is suitable for them?

What other communications do they receive?

About success

How will you know if the content has achieved what you want?

How will you measure success?

Quotes and timescales

Once we’ve agreed the brief I’ll send you a quote with a price for the work, and ask you to agree it before I start.

Unless we agree something different, your quote will cover:

  • any research I have to do for the project

  • a first draft, and

  • two rounds of changes.

If the brief changes after the project has started, I’ll be happy to give you an updated quote to agree.

I’ll also agree timescales with you for delivering the project. This will include:

  • my deadlines for sending you drafts, and

  • your deadlines for giving me comments.

I’m always happy to be as flexible about timescales as I can.
